Today in Gaming - 3/4/11: Gears of War 3, SOCOM 4 Betas Detailed

The Game Developers Conference is, to me, the single most exciting videogame event of the year. While it's not heavily populated with the exciting announcements of E3 and the Tokyo Game Show, it is filled with fascinating discussions from the brightest minds in the industry. That's not to say we don't get the occasional reveal -- we learned this week that Bungie is indeed working on an MMO and that a 3D Mario game is in development for 3DS. But it's the panels where we get to hear from the likes of Yu Suzuki and David Cage that are the big draw. (And it doesn't hurt that we get to see tech demos of what the next generation of games could look like.) If you missed anything, be sure to take a look back at all of our GDC coverage from this past week.

Today's highlights:

And here's what else happened today:

SOCOM 4 Beta Rolling Out in Four Phases

Depending on just which way you plan on getting into the beta of SOCOM 4, you'll be getting in during one of four different phases. A private beta will kick off on March 15, with those eligible being contacted soon. PlayStation Plus subscribers will then get in a week later, on March 22. Killzone 3 owners with a beta code will join on March 29, followed by the rest of the public on April 5. The beta will be ending for everyone on April 13.

Alan Wake PC Cancellation Was Out of Remedy's Hands

Alan Wake was in development for such a long time that it was especially disappointing when the PC version was canceled. Thankfully the 360 version came out, but why did the PC version get canned? Asked that very question, Remedy's Markus Maki said, "I can't really discuss that. I will say that it wasn't a technological call. And it wasn't made in Finland." That would presumably mean publisher Microsoft is to blame for Alan Wake being a 360 exclusive.

Kinect Could be Considered, but No Sequel Plans for Halo Wars

343 Industries sees the original Halo Wars as a "huge success" according to creative director Frank O'Connor. Despite what that might lead some to believe, that success doesn't guarantee a sequel will be made. He said, "[I]s the will to do a sequel there? Who knows. We could do something that works on Kinect, for example. There's no will against it but we're not working on it right now."
