Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 videos add Frank West and Rocket Raccoon to roster

Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3?s expanded roster is full of wonderfully strange additions, and now one of the most confusing finally gets showcased in these new trailers. Some might have thought addingPhoenix Wrightwas niche, but that?s nothing compared to Rocket Raccoon. Perhaps 99% of readers haven?t heard of the space-faring animal-man, but those dissatisfied should find solace in today?s other gameplay reveal for Frank West.

http://www.gamesradar.com/ultimate-marvel-vs-capcom-3-videos-add-frank-west-and-rocket-raccoon-roster/

Dead Rising?s Frank looks pretty accurate in his trailer, with zombie throws, wrestling moves, and baseball bats. It?s great that his rest pose is always holding his camera and it seems he even does damage by taking an opponent?s photo. Though we like his specials that included combo weapons and chainsaws, our favorite has to be shoving a Servbot head on an enemy and then helicopter spinning them. Now that Frank?s finally in the game, he looks to be fitting in great.

http://www.gamesradar.com/ultimate-marvel-vs-capcom-3-videos-add-frank-west-and-rocket-raccoon-roster/

If that trailer of Rocket Raccoon looking like a total badass didn?t sell you on the character, we don?t know what will. A very minor character until a few years ago, Rocket joined the Guardians of the Galaxy and attempts to keep the cosmic peace. The outwardly cute alien is an expert in most weapons, making him a dangerous (though loyal) operative. With his big moves and short stature he could end up being a real challenge, and we hope the rest of the gaming world comes to love him as much as we do.

Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 comes out for PS3 and 360 November 15.

Vita Missing Out on the Holidays Doesn't Worry Sony

PlayStation Vita

Since it became very apparent the 3DS wouldn't immediately turn into the hit Nintendo expected it to be, the company has been urging investors to allow the system to reach its first holiday shopping season before passing judgment on it. After all, that's the best time of the year to be selling gaming hardware. Sony, on the other hand, decided not to rush Vita out so it could benefit from the last quarter of 2011; for much of the world, the new handheld will be out in early 2012, a launch window Sony says it's fine with.

In an interview with All Things Digital, Sony hardware marketing director John Koller called pre-orders for Vita "substantial and" indicated the wait until 2012 is due to a desire to meet demand.

"We've increased production materially since E3," he explained. "We learned our lesson to make sure you have enough product."

It's not a guarantee that having a hardware shortage is actually a bad thing from a sales perspective. It was incredibly difficult to find a Wii for a long period of time after launch, yet it continued to sell well despite that. PS3 wasn't quite so hard to find even though Sony tried to make it seem like it was.

Vita will launch in Japan on December 17. Three months later, on February 22, it'll be out in North America and Europe -- unless you decide to pre-order a First Edition bundle, in which case you'll be able to get it a week early.

Koller points to the launch of the PlayStation Portable's North American launch in March 2005, when the system sold one million units in its first week, as evidence that a launch during that part of the year isn't a major disadvantage.

Of course, the world was much different in 2005 both in terms of the economy and the state of handheld gaming. Many would say smartphones and tablets have taken a permanent chunk out of the handheld gaming market, and it's partially due to this that the 3DS has struggled in its first year. Koller, as you'd expect, doesn't think it's a problem because Vita offers something more.

"This is a larger game experience. We think we are insulated from the competition," Koller claimed. "We love mobile games. Mobile and tablets games are additive."

We'll see if Koller is right once the system launches next year at $249.99 (for the Wi-Fi-only model) and $299.99 (for the 3G model).

Stupidness 3 Review (iPhone)

Updated 2 hours, 20 minutes ago

Stupidness 3 is stupid. Well, at least that?s how it makes you feel. Credited in the App Store to Ming Liang Chien, the game, as a whole, is developed by OrangeNose Studio. A compilation of various questions, puzzles, and mini-games, it?s an app that is creative in its design, utilizing several out-of-the-box answers. That in mind, the game actually seems to try and make the player feel like a moron by limiting their answer time and making the answers as ambiguous as possible.

Stupidness 3 is part of a series that has fluctuated in terms of its success, and any criticism must be prefaced by the fact that this game will not appeal to everyone. Broken up into sections of questions, you work your way through the game, restarting at pre-set checkpoints. Restarting a lot at pre-set checkpoints. As you answer each question, your ?IQ? score increases. At the end of each section, that total is tallied up and becomes sharable on Facebook, but most of the time for new players, it will be rather low.

Stupidness 3

What contributes to the relatively low scoring of the game is that time is limited and questions are designed to intentionally try and fool you. In terms of the former, every wrong answer reduces the total time left to complete a section. What makes matters worse, though, is that sometimes even the wrong answer is unclear.

Some questions are fairly straight forward, and actually test intelligence such as pattern recognition or carefully reading instructions. For example, a particularly good one asks you to fit three shapes within three outlines. There are two triangles and a square along with the outlines of the same. However, the triangular outlines are slightly rotated, thus you cannot place the shapes within them. Instead, they must all be placed within the square outline.

It is a beautiful example of lateral thinking and makes for a great brain teaser. However, all too often, Stupidness 3 simply goes against the usability and intuitiveness of software in general. For example, one question asks you to compose the smallest possible number with a series of three digits. The solution? The game expects you to drag the period from the actual directions and make a decimal number. For virtually every other game, players never interact with instructions in such a way, thus there is no chance that a new user to the series would think to do so. There are several other examples of unintuitive brain teasers where it is impossible to really know what the game expects, resulting in wrong answers.

Another a good example of this is a teaser that asks you to ?Push the button? in which a big round button is presented on the screen. Player intuition is to touch it, which is, technically, pushing the button. Nonetheless, the game wants a different type of pushing which would be touching the empty space around the button and ?pushing it? that way. Okay, it makes sense, but normally users on a touch-based game don?t interact with nothing.

As you progress through the game?s 100+ puzzles, you begin to get the gist of how the game expects you to think and begin to take into consideration all possible interactions. Unfortunately, Stupidness 3 does still stump you with new interactions as soon as old ones become part of your thought patterns, such as arbitrarily rotating or shaking the iDevice. As with all the other examples, it is usually impossible to realize that that is what it wants. All that said, Stupidness 3 requires a certain type of user to enjoy, and those uninitiated by the previous iterations of the game are likely to become frustrated and annoyed (and in some cases insulted) very quickly. It often feels like someone asking you what two plus two is, in a foreign language, and then calling you dumb for not knowing.

Stupidness 3

In order to mitigate some of the frustration, the application does have a hint system, which will explain the solution (which is sometimes done better in some puzzles than others) at the cost of one?s IQ score. Unfortunately there is no way to simply access the hints. You have to put in a few wrong answers before the prompt to use the feature appears.

Despite the game?s numerous qualms, it is presented very well, and has a wonderfully simplistic and cartoonish art style to it. Also, once again, it is worth stating that the creativity behind some of these brain teasers is phenomenal. It?s just that the audience is going to be pretty hit and miss in regards to whether or not it is appealing to them. For fans of the series, and those used to the style of thinking Stupidness 3 asks of them, it is a wonderful addition to one?s iPhone collection. That said, if you are new to the game, impatient, or easily frustrated (or even moderately frustrated), this is an app to steer well clear of.

Iwata Talks New Genres for 3DS, Demos, eShop on Smartphones, Wii U, and More

3DS

This year isn't turning out to be a great one for Nintendo. After a weak launch for the 3DS that forced Nintendo to drop its price after only a few months on store shelves, Nintendo is now forecasting a loss for the year ending March 31, 2012 -- the first time this will have happened since the company started reporting its consolidated earnings reports 30 years ago.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata feels responsible for much of this (as evidenced by the salary cut he and other executives took over the summer), although he's not about to sit around and mope. He and Nintendo have a plan.

"To begin with, I feel greatly accountable for missing our financial forecast for the half year ended September and revising downward our forecast for the full year," Iwata said in a briefing on the results that were revealed yesterday.

"Strong momentum is very important for game platform businesses and a strong software lineup to vitalize a platform is necessary to maintain this momentum. In the first half of this year, however, we could not make the continuing sales of the first-party software released last year as we had planned, nor, in the course of preparation of the next platform, could we release new key titles for the existing platform in a timely fashion due to completion delays until the latter half of this year."

After reviewing what's happened in the first six months of this fiscal year (from April through September), Iwata talked about trends and sales expectations before touching upon some specific plans the company has going forward. That includes continuing to try to capture the non-gaming crowd, a task it feels it can do regardless of competition from smartphones.

Nintendo plans to do this by "working on new genres of software that may attract people who are not particularly interested in video games." It will have "several" such titles to release in the next fiscal year.

"Some of you may be thinking that, with the expansion of smartphones today, proposing new genres, such as the company did with Brain Training and Wii Fit, might be difficult," Iwata said. "However, the company will aim to develop and launch products that can provide meaningful surprises to the public by taking advantage of the company's position of being able to make new proposals that integrate both hardware and software, and of its ability to develop products that can be accepted by a wide variety of consumers, irrespective of age, gender or past gaming experience."

DS evergreen titles

In addition to those different types of games, Nintendo is hoping it can continue to hit on the sort of evergreen games it enjoyed with Wii and DS. A typical game sells the majority of its units at its launch and shortly thereafter. Each of the DS games shown above enjoyed 66 percent or more of its sales following its launch year; Mario Kart DS was the most exceptional in this regard with 81% of its life-to-date sales came after its launch year. New Super Mario Bros. did 66 percent of its sales after its launch year, a figure which equated to nearly 20 million additional units. What's especially impressive about this is when remembering Nintendo's hesitance to drop the prices of these games, unlike your average game which many times will drop in price in less than a year after release.

Iwata said that Nintendo's two big fall 3DS releases -- Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 -- have the potential for this sort of tail, as does Nintendogs + Cats. Provided the hardware continues to sell, there's no reason to believe he's wrong.

OnLive Expands To Include Square Enix Titles Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief & Hitman

OnLive Service Works On Cell Phones, Too

OnLive announced today that they will be expanding their monthly subscription "Playpack" plan to include more than twelve major franchise titles from Square Enix, includingTomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief, Mini Ninjas and Hitman. The Square Enix titles will begin arriving in the OnLive PlayPack service in a few weeks. For the uninitiated, OnLive's Playpack option allows "all you can play" gaming for $9.99 per month, either on your television via the OnLive Game System, or through your Mac or PC via a small browser download.

Steve Perlman, founder and CEO of OnLive, said "We?re proud of our strong partnership with Square Enix and we look forward to providing a solid and effective platform for their current and future game titles." Phil Rogers, CEO of Square Enix Europe added, "In the dynamically changing environment of digital distribution, it?s a natural fit for Square Enix to support an innovative offering like PlayPack from OnLive. We?re pleased to be able to share some of our classic games with the broader digital audience."

That might sound like plain marketing yammer, but what it translates to is "I can now play the classic Deus Ex games, on my TV!" That's all I needed to hear.

TF2's Third Annual Scream Fortress Very Scary Halloween Special spews forth, gets our costumes messy

The Halloween spirit is alive and well (or dead and sickly - take your pick) over at Team Fortress 2. Valve has unleashed its Third Annual Scream Fortress Very Scary Halloween Special, treating players to a twisted version of the Viaduct map, and an up close and personal encounter with the terror-inducing Monoculus (cue: organ, lightning, screams, etc.).

Running now until November 6, the Halloween expansion introduces players to the ghoulish Eyeaduct map. Demoman's missing eyeball has come loose and started raising hell under its new identity, Monoculus (cue: more lightning, screams, and a link leading to the Valve's cheeky online comic book explaining the backstory in full).

Other Halloween additions include nine class-specific costumes, loads of spooky loot, new Mann Co. Store items, and a pair of new 'eye-chievements' that can be won by defeating Monoculus and storming 'Loot Island'.

TF2's blog promises this year's Halloween special will not be nearly as scary as last year's event, which it says exceeded their own ?impossible high standard of scary?, explaining:

?Long story short, we guarantee you that nothing's going to scare you this year. There will be no ENORMOUS HAUNTED EYEBALL to terrorize you around an island filled with tons of SECRET LOOT, and a GIANT SKULL! There will be approximately zero percent chance of you getting your trembling hands on a spooky costume FOR EVERY CLASS!"

Frankly, we think they're lying about toning it down. Let us know what you think of TF2's big Halloween scare... if you make it out alive (cue: maniacal laughing, wolf howls, the sounds of a joke being beaten to death).

Play Orcs Must Die, Fear 3, Metro 2033, and Amnesia for free this weekend

If you haven?t tried cloud gaming with OnLive, this weekend would be a good time to start. From today through Monday, October 31, you can play Orcs Must Die, Fear 3, Metro 2033, and Amnesia for free. Become a fan of OnLive on Facebook for an unannounced fifth free game that?ll be available this Monday.

To get your free games:
1. Sign up, install and launch the OnLive app. This part?s free.
2. Go to the Marketplace and pick any of the temporarily free games mentioned
3. Select ?Get Game? and 3-Day Rental ($0.00)
4. Enter your password and play

The great thing about OnLive is that you don?t need a powerful gaming rig to play games. All the work is done by OnLive?s data centers, which stream the game to your monitor via your internet connection. Since the service first launched, OnLive has partnered with many more publishers, significantly increasing the number of titles available for you to sample, rent, or purchase.

Since OnLive?s been beefing up its catalogue, promotions like this seem like a good next step for the service, but if you only have time to play one of the 3-day freebies available this weekend, we?d recommend going with Orcs Must Die. It?s Army of Darkness meets Tower Defense.

Rumor Dept.: New Xbox 360 Dash Nov. 25th, Using Some Apple Tech

Rumor Dept.: New Xbox 360 Dash Nov. 25th, Using Some Apple Tech

The freshly designed, Silverlight-powered Xbox 360 dash may be coming November 25th is a report from GigaOM is correct. Microsoft has yet to make any announcement or even a shot at entering a beta as of press time.

The new dash would then go live Black Friday, thus causing some to rush their stampeding deal-hunting on one of the holiday?s biggest shopping dates to download the visually appealing re-imagining.

Of more interest for this fourth go-around within Microsoft?s hardware (again assuming the report is correct), the new streaming partners will not be using Microsoft?s streaming technology, Smooth Streaming. Instead, third parties will be utilizing Apple?s HTTP Live Streaming for video, which probably doesn?t say much for Microsoft?s work.

Team Fortress 2 Celebrates Halloween With Costumes and a Map

Team Fortress 2 Halloween 2011

For the third year running, Team Fortress 2 is running a Halloween event. However, this is the first time the event will take place since the game went free-to-play, meaning anyone who wants to fight an enormous eyeball named Monoculus is just a Steam download away.

The Third Annual Scream Fortress Very Scary Halloween Special, as it's called, brings with it a brand-new Halloween map designed just for the occasion. You'll have the chance to fight Monoculus and pick up a pair of new Achievements while also trying to earn access to "secret loot" and nine costume packs, each one specific to a single class. There's also a new comic to read.

2009's debut event was much tamer; there were a few tweaks, hats, and a map, but not much else. Last year didn't feature anything as good as the costumes this year, though it did have the Horseless Headless Horsemann, who is perhaps more threatening than a giant eyeball. That is, unless you have an irrational fear of oversized eyeballs, in which case you might want to avoid playing on any Halloween servers between now and November 6, which is how long the event runs for. Also, don't scroll down.

First footage of Ace Attorney film hits the internet

We?re big fans of Capcom?s dramatic law and order series Ace Attorney and were excited when we first heard a films was being made based on it and that it would be helmed by gonzo director Takashi Miike (Audition, Ichi the Killer). We thought we?d have to wait till next week to see footage of the game, but we got some early. Just be prepared to listen to the loud reactions of Japanese talk show hosts.

We don?t blame you if you muted it, but it looked amazing. So many classic moments from the first Phoenix Wright game are on display, with iconic characters like Miles Edgeworth, Mia and Maya, von Karma and even Larry Butz looking spot-on. Seeing the dramatic events unfold in live action raised our pulses, and we love that everyone has all the exaggerated hair and clothes that we?ve come to love. Hopefully we?ll see even more when the official trailer is released next week, and then we?ll probably get to hear what the movie sounds like too.

SPONSORED: The ability to build a supercar like in Forza 4? No one man should have all that power

The great thing (well, one of the many great things) about Forza Motorsport 4 is that you can build your ideal supercar. You can choose the type of wheels, suspension, paint job... pretty much anything, really. So Microsoft decided to let Forza fans do the same, only with a real car - which was subsequently built by mechanic and obvious car nut Paul Sanderson in one week. In a shopping mall. No one man should have all that power, BUT HE DOES.

http://www.gamesradar.com/sponsored-ability-build-supercar-no-one-man-should-have-all-power/

Incidentally, we only just got the reference regarding that song that plays on the Forza adverts. It's Kanye West's 'Power', right? Well, 'Forza' is Italian for 'Force', as in 'strength'. Or 'power'. Aaaah, now it makes sense. Presumably that's what the chanting is at the start of it: 'Heeeey' is the chorus line questioning the relevance, then 'aaah' as they understand.

That's how hip hop works, you know - it's actually very literal. Yep.

D-Link Boxee Box Tech Review

The Boxee from D-Link can do more than just wirelessly stream HD media to any television, thanks to its remote and full QWERTY keyboard. Kevin Pereira and Candace Bailey review the device that allows users to search and stream as much Internet content as they want for only $200.

Find the full review from Gadget Pron on Attack of the Show after the cut.

What You Need to Know

  • The Boxee Box has a ton of inputs and outputs, like HDMI out, optical audio out, wired and wireless internet connections, 2 USB ports, and an SD card slot.
  • At first glance, the interface is self-explanatory, so you know where to find TV shows, movies, and apps.
  • There's really no way to tell which content costs money, so you may run into a lot of stuff that isn't free before you find what you're looking for.
  • It doesn?t have a dedicated back button, so sometimes the menu button will go back, and other times it won't.
  • We also liked that they put a full keyboard on the back side of the remote.
  • It's pretty easy to type on since the keys are spaced out and they click down easily.
  • All you do is start typing and it will give you a drop-down list of content available.
  • Sometimes it would take awhile for the box to catch up to fast typing.
  • It needs a backlight.
  • The Boxee Box might just have a little more media content than everyone else.
  • You'll get apps like Netflix, VUDU, Pandora, and a ton of others, but sometimes they're just shortcuts to web pages.
  • You can also buy movies and TV shows through VUDU, or you might even get lucky and find some of that stuff for free on the web.
  • They have a little more content than Google TV since almost every television network is blocking Google right now.
  • The browser is underpowered, so the shortcuts to web pages are bad.
  • Even though it supports Flash, it's super slow and not at all easy to use.
  • The remote only has a directional pad, so you'll have to scroll your mouse cursor around the page at an incredibly slow rate to click on anything.
  • It's also crashed on us numerous times while running Flash-heavy pages, which are usually the ones with the content we want.
  • Another thing unique to the Boxee Box is how you can see what your friends are watching; you can scroll through your friends' choices and watch whatever they've shared.
  • You can also share whatever you like, and it will drop into your friend's list.
  • It's a good idea, but it's hard to find friends on Boxee.

Price

  • It?s $200 on Best Buy?s site

Overall Rating

  • 3 Seals of Approval Out of 5 (How do we rate gadgets?)
  • They've got some cool concepts here, like the social aspect and keyboard remote, but for $80 more, you can get the Logitech Revue, which has cable pass-through, a universal remote, and a better interface
