What happens when Pirates of the Caribbean meets LEGO? Well, besides LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game. You get swashbuckling blocks and a lot of attention to detail. But what does the search for a plastic Black Pearl look like? Apparently, not like plain old plastic bricks. But don't take my word for it. Check out what Nikole Zivalich had to say when she checked the game out at GDC.
"At first glance, LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean looks like a LEGO game; it's colorful, it's bouncy, and everything is made of LEGOS. But after my glance turned into a stare, I noticed the jungle I was in had textures, leaves, vines, none of which were made of LEGOS. What surprised me wasn't simply the detailed landscape, it was how detailed it was. Another level I was shown took place on a pirate ship, but rather than being on a shiny, plastic Black Pearl, I was on a rotted wood, lines in the planks, realistic looking pirate ship."

We're only a week away from November 18 now, the day that will mark the 10-year anniversary of Nintendo's GameCube. The Big N's fourth home console after the NES, SNES and N64, the Cube made it out to market at a time when Nintendo's fans were in a similar situation to where we finds ourselves today.
The circumstance we're experiencing now, at the end of the Wii's life cycle and looking forward to the release of the Wii U, is a lot like what the fan situation felt like 10 years ago. We first started drawing those parallels earlier this week with our article The Final Days of the N64, where we looked back on the Nintendo 64's final successful Christmas season, its last wave of notable software and the failure of what would've been that console's swan song, Conker's Bad Fur Day.
We left off our story in Spring of 2001, when there was still another half a year to pass before the Cube would finally go on sale in November. So what happened next? How did Nintendo's fans deal with zero new first-party releases for the home console for six months straight? Read on as we continue the tale, and continue drawing parallels to today's events. These were the days before the GameCube arrived.
The Big N's console business went almost entirely dark while the spotlight turned to the launch of the Game Boy Advance. The GBA was the long-awaited successor to the aged original Game Boy and transitional Game Boy Color handhelds, a true 16-bit-esque upgrade to the 8-bit style that Nintendo had been pushing in the portable space for over a decade.
The Game Boy Advance's arrival on store shelves was an important precursor to the GameCube's launch, too, because Nintendo had plans to bridge the gap between its portable and home console businesses. A wave of "connectivity" software was being prepped behind the scenes, and anyone investing in a GBA unit in the summer of 2001 was also buying an early GameCube controller, in a way. Later titles like Pac-Man Vs., The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles would all make use of the handheld's screen as a secondary display for what the Cube was projecting onto the TV.
That was a little bit beyond 2001, though, and probably the more prominent memory for fans who experienced the GBA launch were the problems that plagued it. Nintendo's software selection was criticized when the day one release Super Mario Advance ended up being nothing more than a slightly tweaked port of the old Super Mario Bros. 2.
And gamers were not at all pleased with the default screen in the first wave of GBAs. It had no lighting solution built-in and so was frustratingly difficult to see without tons of external lighting set at just the right angle. Aftermarket lighting kits did big business as Nintendo dealt with consumer complaints, and ultimately the remodeled Game Boy Advance SP was launched in early 2003 to officially address the issue.
Company president Satoru Iwata has recently gone on record to admit that the resources dedicated to shifting portable development from the DS to the 3DS has had the side effect of sidelining work on new Wii games, resulting in the current gap in the release schedule similar to what the months preceding the GameCube saw - they seemed to be saying, "If you're a Nintendo console gamer, sorry. But wouldn't you like this nice, new portable in the meanwhile?"
The 3DS has been a mirror image of the GBA's other issues, too. Its screen has been criticized for its own shortcomings, along with the rest of its hardware design - leading many to predict that a redesigned "3DS SP" will be coming along soon. That prediction has only grown in strength as the system heads toward the end of this year, with the release of the Circle Pad Pro acting much like the aftermarket lighting kits sought to alter original GBAs.
The 3DS launch lineup was torn a new one by disappointed fans across the industry and Internet, and the outcry has been much more intense than it was with any previous portable. Nintendo has apologized for this too, and thankfully the final months of this year leading up to the Christmas season have addressed that issue well (just as the arrival of great original titles like Advance Wars and Golden Sun helped offset early concerns about the GBA library being nothing but SNES ports.)
And, just as much as the promise of the Game Boy Advance wouldn't be realized until the GameCube came along, Nintendo once again seems to be in the position of lingering portable potential right now. Connectivity between the 3DS and upcoming Wii U won't be as much of a focus as what the Big N was working on 10 years ago, but the Wii U's own screen-equipped new controller is absolutely an echo of that decade-old idea - and hopefully now, having seen the solid design of Nintendo's multi-screen games during the GameCube's life cycle, we can be a bit more encouraged and patient in this current console transition waiting period.

You may have missed this, but basically every single game that matters is launching this month. And we?ve given out so many glowing reviews, we don?t blame you for wanting to jump in a midnight launch line immediately. But wait! You?re obviously forgetting the magical 24-hour period known as Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving when everything is on sale and people are trampled for a $99 HD TV. Today Best Buy?s Black Friday ad has leaked weeks ahead of time and includes some crazy deals that might cause you to delay some purchases.
As posted on a Black Friday deals site Best Buy has some crazy sales for the official start of the holiday shopping season. Chief among the game deals are major recent releases going for $30, including Arkham City, Rage, Battlefield 3, and Uncharted 3. What?s an even bigger shocker is that games that come out next week are on the sales list, including Need for Speed The Run and Assassin?s Creed Revelations going for $30 and $35 respectively. So maybe remember that when you?re about to pay $60 next week for those titles. We also spotted special 3DS bundles that pack in Super Mario 3D Land and Ocarina 3D for just $10 over the retail price of the handheld by itself.
Now this story isn?t meant to be an ad for Best Buy, as these types of deals will probably pop up in all the usual spots like Wal-Mart, Toys ?R Us and Target too. And if you?d rather not line up at 3 AM after Thanksgiving, you should find similar deals on Amazon too, as history has shown the online retail usually does its best to match those low prices. We?ll keep you posted on any other crazy as they pop up.

Nintendo 3DS owners having been begging for a 3D Mario title since the handheld first launched back in March of this year, and Nintendo has finally answered their prayers in the form ofSuper Mario 3D Land. Nintendo is aiming to end the less than stellar drought that has been plaguing the portable system since launch, and Super Mario 3D Land will more than quench the thirst of handheld enthusiasts.
There are a few faults that may frustrate players but, at the end of the day, this game is the reason why people bought their 3DS, and it should be owned by everyone with the portable.
Super Mario 3D Land throws the all-to-familiar plumber into a new environment that is fine tuned to accommodate the Nintendo 3DS? glasses-less 3D abilities. The graphics in this game are easily the best found on the 3DS to date, and fans won?t be disappointed by the use of 3D either. Unlike many other games, 3D actually serves a purpose and is essential for certain areas in the world. The game actually goes out of its way to troll players who are playing through the game with the 3D turned off, and having it on makes every leap from platform to platform much easier. Super Mario 3D Land is the first game on this handheld that uses the third dimension in a way that it doesn?t feel like a gimmick, and that?s a massive accomplishment.
There are initially eight worlds that Mario is tasked with going through to, once again, rescue Princess Peach. There are plenty of familiar faces, both friend and foe, and more importantly one returning power-up in particular that newcomers and loyalists will enjoy. Mario faithfuls will also be delighted when they learn that the goal pole has been returned to its rightful place at the end of each level ? effectively replacing the star at the end ? as well as the infamous Airship levels that were notorious for their challenging difficulty. The Mushroom Kingdom feels more familiar in Super Mario 3D Land then it ever has before, and that?s in large part because of the nods to the series? past.
Power-ups have always been an important part of Mario games, and Super Mario 3D Land is no exception. The classic Tanooki suit makes its triumphant return to the gaming scene with a few alterations. The suit has been modified ? this time allowing players to briefly hover and slow their decent after a jump and that serves a huge purpose when trying to navigate different platforms. Other power-ups include the propeller box, Boomerang Plant, and Fire Flower, and each serves a purpose that can be especially helpful ? and occasionally crucial ? in completing certain obstacles. The power-ups are great and all, but there isn?t much variety, and after a while the powers they bestow upon Mario can become a little stale.
The one thing that is instantly noticeable after playing through a few worlds is that the levels are extremely short, and can actually be completed within four or five minutes. These aren?t massive worlds like those found in past games like Mario Galaxy, but instead are nice little bite-sized pieces that are perfect for anyone who just wants to pick up and play some Mario. It?s easy to think that smaller worlds are a bad thing, but Nintendo has designed each of the worlds, and the levels that fill them, to be extremely fun and rewarding. Don?t worry, this title provides gamers with countless hours of content, but we?ll get into that in a bit.
Super Mario 3D Land will lure players into a false sense of confidence by making a majority of the first levels easy to complete and traverse through, and then it slowly (but surely) begins to turn up the proverbial heat. Some of the later levels will have players loudly cursing at their handheld in an attempt to scare it into submission after several deaths. If you reach a point where you?re not able to complete a certain level then the game will grant you power-ups to help get frustrated players over some difficult humps. Five deaths will grant players a Tanooki suit that will make them completely immune to enemy attacks, and if they still can?t manage to get the job done then after 10 deaths players will receive the fabled P-Wing and it will teleport them to the end of the level. These special power-ups are completely optional however, so those who are enjoying the challenge don?t have to use them.
The best part of Super Mario 3D Land isn?t in the first eight worlds, as many will likely assume. The real challenge begins after completing World 8 and defeating Bowser for, what many believe to be, the final time. I was a little disappointed after beating Bowser because I thought I had completed the game in a short amount of time, but after the credits rolled I learned just how mistaken I actually was. Another eight worlds immediately unlocked, and I was given access to a modified Tanooki suit with a bandana (which allowed Mario to change to stone) and after a short while I also earned the ability to play as Luigi.
Each of the levels that appear after completion of the initial game take place in previous levels, but occasionally players are tasked with different challenges. There?s a shadow race where Mario will have to race against his evil doppleganger Shadow Mario, and a ?Time Challenge? mode where players will have to scurry across a level?s terrain in search of more clocks to increase what little time they often have left. When a level pops up that isn?t a time challenge or shadow race then it will be a redesigned area for Mario to jump around ? one that players have yet to experience.
Super Mario 3D Land is one of those pickup-and-play games that fans of the series and newcomers alike won?t be able to put down. There is a ton of content that will keep players preoccupied for hours on end, thanks to the difficulty of later levels and compulsive need to collect all of the star badges that are hidden within each level. The game isn?t without flaws though, as making certain jumps can be a little difficult at times when it?s hard to judge the depth on some platforms, and the lack of additional power-ups is also noticeable. However, our mustachio?d friend is in some of the finest form ever on the Nintendo 3DS, and Super Mario 3D Land is a must-own game for Nintendo fans.

Japan doesn't get Saints Row: The Third until a couple of days after the game's American release, but testy authorities have already ordered one prominent cut to the game's weaponry, neutering the game's Penetrator. If that name conjures images of an outsized, weaponized phallus, you're bang on the money ? except in Japan, where developers have been forced to make the weapon a little bit more SFW.
Which, by the way, the next image probably ain't, so if you're at work you might not want to read the rest of this decidedly NSFW post.
Western players will get to swing the veiny monstrosity above when Saints Row: The Third's released next week, but Japan's version strips out the fine-grained anatomical detail, scaling the implement down from ?gleefully obscene? to merely ?vaguely objectionable.? The club's suggestive bendiness (or flacidness) is also removed, though it's hard to say the idea of a fleshy, rock-solid smacking implement doesn't at least strongly hint at the weapon's origins.
Above: Yeah, nothing dickish going on here
?Hold up,? every single person in the world's saying, ?Japan's where that tentacle manga comes from, how can they have a problem with this?? Experts on the intricacies of Japanese censorship ? of whom you surely know several ? will explain that cartoon depictions of freaky octo-demon sex are one of the ways producers have traditionally gotten around the letter of the law, which forbids ?depiction of genital parts? but not ?depiction of things that do everything genital parts do except the looking-exactly-like-junk bit.? Being as Saints Row: The Third looks to have no shortage of amusingly phallic-looking things used to amusingly phallic effect, we're sure Japanese players will deal with this minor emasculation.

It's an unexciting week for deals all around which isn't good news for those who can't afford to purchase any of the new, high-quality games coming out this month. It's not the best of times to find a cheap distraction.
That's not to say there isn't anything worth your money. Amazon is offering the Men of War Collection for $10, a purchase that will get you a credit to purchase a digital version of Men of War: Vietnam for $10. If that's not your thing, Amazon also has the digital PC versions of Battlefield 3 for $50.99, Civilization V: Game of the Year Edition for $39.99, and L.A. Noire: The Complete Edition for $39.99.
Steam has an unusually small number of games on sale this week. If you're a racing fan, however, you might be in luck -- F1 2011 and Dirt 3 are each $24.99. Also of note is the Game of the Year Edition of Batman: Arkham Asylum continuing to be just $6.79 from GamersGate, a hell of a cheap price for such a terrific game.
With Black Friday coming up on November 25, there's going to be no shortage of terrific deals to be had before long. While it's not directly related to any deals or discounts, American Express has launched a campaign called Small Business Saturday. Consumers are being encouraged to support local small business owners -- arcades, mom and pop stores, and other things of that nature -- on Saturday, November 26. You can find out more in the official promo video.
Read on for a full look at this week's deals and let us know what we missed in the comments below.

The Square Enix titles will begin arriving in the OnLive PlayPack service in a few weeks. For the uninitiated, OnLive's Playpack option allows "all you can play" gaming for $9.99 per month, either on your television via the OnLive Game System, or through your Mac or PC via a small browser download.
Steve Perlman, founder and CEO of OnLive, said "We?re proud of our strong partnership with Square Enix and we look forward to providing a solid and effective platform for their current and future game titles." That might sound like plain marketing yammer, but what it translates to is "I can now play the classic Deus Ex games, on my TV!" That's all I needed to hear.

Jake Gaskill is currently playing inFamous 2 at GDC right this very second, which makes us all jealous of him. But more exciting than that is the announcement that Sucker Punch just made about their baby: players will be able to generate their own user-created missions in the game, and if they get popular enough, they will show up in the single-player game.

The key fact you'll want to know to know is that the kit includes everything they used to make the actual game, plus some stuff that's exclusive to the user generated tool set. According to Jake, "There will be filters that will let you choose what types of user-generated missions you want to show up. Mission start locators will stream into the actual single-player game, so you'll see them as you run around. Filters will keep it from being too crowded.
But if you want the full story, head on over to the inFamous 2 User Generated Missions Preview. But before you do that, head on after the jump to see a couple of images explaining how user-created missions will appear in the game.
Additionally, there will be a beta launching in early April, and the best beta levels will be chosen to be available in retail game when inFamous 2 launches on June 7th. Which, coincidentally, is the very first day of E3. Details about how to get in the beta will be revealed on March 14.

A fall dashboard update is on the way by the end of the year. Before that hits, Xbox.com will be getting an update to introduce some new functionality.
As detailed in an Xbox.com blog, the My Xbox section of the site is being replaced with a new Social section. The big addition is the ability to browse and set Beacons, a form of notification that allows you to broadcast what games you're interested in playing online, as well as specific details, such as a specific time or mode. Up to three can be set at a time, each with their own custom description.
These can be seen from the new Activity page (or your Xbox, post-update), where you'll also find your recently played games, which of your friends are playing them, and any related Beacons.
The main page of the Social section is populated with a number of things, including the requisite links to your messages, friends list, download queue, and a code redemption page. Advertisements for a handful of games in the same style as the new dashboard are found at the top, and below that are the most popular games among those on your friends list, your recent activity, and a list of any friends who are online.
Other changes coming in the update are a redesigned messages section and the ability to browse the Zune video catalog (and buy movies or TV shows that can be downloaded on your Xbox 360 or other supported device).
The update should be out "in the coming days." Microsoft isn't detailing all of its features in advance, so we'll have to wait until then to get a look at everything that's new.
As for when we'll see Beacons on 360 itself -- they'll be accessible from Windows Phone devices once the Xbox.com update goes live -- there is no official date for when the fall dashboard update is being released. November 15 and November 25 have both been pegged as potential dates, although the latter is the more likely of the two.

The first game based on A Song of Ice and Fire, a real-time strategy game known as A Game of Thrones: Genesis, was released just over a month ago. An RPG known simply as Game of Thrones is also in development, and that's not the only game in the works based on George R.R. Martin's epic novel series -- at least two more are on the way.
The first of these two, according to USA Today, is an MMORPG. It's being developed by Bigpoint, the company responsible for the browser-based MMO Battlestar Galactica Online, among many other, lesser-known games.
The other is a social networking game based on the series. USA Today suggests it's like FarmVille comes to Westeros, although that comparison may only be apt in that FarmVille is the best-known social networking game around -- chances are you won't be managing a Thrones-themed garden.
Both games are expected out in 2012, as is the RPG. It's noted that HBO will share video from the TV show, which wrapped up its first season in June, for use in the game. That's good news for those of us who were very pleased with the excellent casting, the biggest standout being Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister. Among the characters who will be voiced by the actor portraying them on HBO is James Cosmo, who plays Jeor Mormont, the Lord Commander of the Night's Watch.
Martin, who is the creator and writer of the series, is involved with the games, having written the storylines for Genesis. However, he readily admits, "I am not an expert in this field. ...I trust in [the developers'] expertise."
The release of Genesis was met with surprisingly little fanfare, and reviews haven't been especially kind. That has many fans worried about the prospects of the RPG given that developer Cyanide Studio was responsible for Genesis. With how little we've seen of the game, it would be unfair to pass judgment on it at this point. At the same time, it's somewhat worrying that the screenshots seen in this story represent a big chunk of what we know at this point.

As promised, Sony is currently prepping a system to allow gamers to transfer (transfar?) their PlayStation Portable games to the UMD-less PS Vita. Today, the publisher announced system to allow Japanese gamers to convert their physical games into digital form for download, but it's not as simple as you might think. First, they'll need to download a verification application from the PlayStation Network, which will then confirm that they have a physical copy of the game. Once verified, the games can be re-purchased from the PSN with a discount, and that discount varies from game to game. While some are free, others are somewhat pricy.
The discounts vary from game to game. Onore no Shizuru Michi wo Yuke, for instance, is available for free, whereas gamers who purchased Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable will need to spend 1,500 yen (about $20) to re-download it on their Vita. Those are the extremes, obviously, and most revealed so far fall between the two prices, coming in at either 500 or 1000 yen.
The full list of games revealed so far is below, courtesy of Siliconera.
Sony hasn't confirmed if this is going to make it to America, but we wouldn't hold our breaths. For one, we might all pass out, and that would be bad for the economy, but also because this isn't Sony's first dance with promising a transfer system that never materialized. We'll keep you posted, though we'd suggest being prepared to re-purchase your games without marginal discounts if you want to continue playing Patapon 3 on the Vita.

Subtitled Razor?s Edge, the Nintendo-specific version should have some updates to make it work better with the console?s touch pad capabilities. Tecmo Koei also listed that the PS3 and 360 versions of Ninja Gaiden 3 should be out next February, making it just another big game that's already crowding early 2012 with potential greatness.

Sword & Sworcery EP, the upcoming iPhone/iPad title from superbrothers, has a new video up. "Audience Calibration Procedure" presents an even more surreal look into this haunting title that uses retro graphics and a sense of wonder to create something new ... if not trippy. We took a look at the game back in October, and it is definitely on our radar. But don't just take my yakkin' for granted. Watch the video above and see what you think.

The latest Activision Blizzard investors conference call has revealed World of Warcraft's subscriber base continues to shrink. Roughly 800,000 subscriptions were lost over a span of about three months, and while that's a pretty substantial number no matter how you slice it, it's not as if it's about to put Blizzard out of business.
In August the company reported WoW had 11.1 million members; that figure has since dropped to 10.3 million, reports GamesIndustry.biz. Blizzard's CEO Mike Morhaime is happy to note that number is still enough to make it "by far the most popular subscription-based MMO in the world." It's also still "one of the most popular online games in China," a market where the largest number of those 800,000 lost subscriptions came from.
The game's fourth expansion pack was announced just last month during BlizzCon. Mists of Pandaria adds a new race, class, continent, and a great deal more, although we don't know when any of this will be coming. We've heard repeatedly that Blizzard wants to increase the rate at which it releases expansion packs, but it looks as if it'll be at least another one-to-two year wait between Cataclysm (released last December) and Pandaria.
In the meantime, the big 4.3 update is expected to keep fans busy with new raids and other content. Morhaime noted the update isn't geared towards bringing in new subscribers, but keeping existing (or former) fans happy.
"It's really not intended to go out and drive new user acquisition, that's a whole other strategy," he stated. "But it does drive engagement with the game, and so that will impact churn if we do it successfully, and will eventually drive winback, as players tell each other about the content they're enjoying."
Subscription rates for the game traditionally fall as time passes following the release of an expansion pack. Pandaria will no doubt bring back a wave of players who have allowed their subscriptions to lapse (perhaps as well as a few panda-loving gamers who have never played the game before), but it's no guarantee that it'll bring subscription numbers back to their peak again. What will likely help that effort is the Annual Pass -- those who commit to subscribing to WoW for a year will get a free digital copy of Diablo III upon release. It's a more expensive route than buying the game on its own, but some may look at it as paying full price for a copy of the game and then only having to pay $10 per month for WoW.
WoW may remain the biggest subscription-based MMO around, as Morhaime noted, but that's becoming less and less meaningful as MMOs go free-to-play. DC Universe Online, The Lord of the Rings Online, City of Heroes, Dungeons & Dragons Online, Pirates of the Burning Sea, Age of Conan, and many others have decided to adopt the increasingly popular free-to-play model.
The one big subscription MMO coming up is Star Wars: The Old Republic, and even developer BioWare has talked about how F2P could eventually become the dominant model. Blizzard has talked about the possibility of dropping subscriptions at some point, and players are now free to play the game up until level 20. However, with upwards of 10 million people still willing to pay a flat fee to play every month (in addition to the money brought in through all of the premium extras we've seen introduced in recent years), don't count on that happening until Blizzard has no other choice.
