A fall dashboard update is on the way by the end of the year. Before that hits, Xbox.com will be getting an update to introduce some new functionality.
As detailed in an Xbox.com blog, the My Xbox section of the site is being replaced with a new Social section. The big addition is the ability to browse and set Beacons, a form of notification that allows you to broadcast what games you're interested in playing online, as well as specific details, such as a specific time or mode. Up to three can be set at a time, each with their own custom description.
These can be seen from the new Activity page (or your Xbox, post-update), where you'll also find your recently played games, which of your friends are playing them, and any related Beacons.
The main page of the Social section is populated with a number of things, including the requisite links to your messages, friends list, download queue, and a code redemption page. Advertisements for a handful of games in the same style as the new dashboard are found at the top, and below that are the most popular games among those on your friends list, your recent activity, and a list of any friends who are online.
Other changes coming in the update are a redesigned messages section and the ability to browse the Zune video catalog (and buy movies or TV shows that can be downloaded on your Xbox 360 or other supported device).
The update should be out "in the coming days." Microsoft isn't detailing all of its features in advance, so we'll have to wait until then to get a look at everything that's new.
As for when we'll see Beacons on 360 itself -- they'll be accessible from Windows Phone devices once the Xbox.com update goes live -- there is no official date for when the fall dashboard update is being released. November 15 and November 25 have both been pegged as potential dates, although the latter is the more likely of the two.
