Apple Announces iPhone 4S, Launching October 14

iPhone

After Apple's new CEO Tim Cook spent a great deal of time talking about various statistics and numbers demonstrating just how awesome Apple is, today's "Let's Talk iPhone" event got to the subject matter that we all really care about: Apple announced a new iPhone model known as the iPhone 4S.

The iPhone 4S looks just like the iPhone 4 but is all-new on the inside. (So much for rumors of a radical redesign.) It has an A5 chip just like the iPad 2, features retina display, glass on the front and back, and a stainless steel band around it. It'll be available in three sizes: 16GB for $199, 32GB for $299, and 64GB (an iPhone first) for $399. Pre-orders begin on October 7 and the phone launches on October 14. Sprint is being added as a carrier, as was widely expected.

It's capable of graphics up to seven times faster (whatever that means, exactly) than the previous iPhone and the CPU is up to two times faster. It offers 8 hours of talk time over 3G, 14 hours over 2G, and 6 hours of 3G browsing.

On the inside is something Apple says has never been done before: there are two antennas that can each transmit and receive. The phone can switch between the two as needed, which should result in better call quality and faster download speeds. These speeds can be up to two times faster -- the number 14.4 Mbps down was mentioned, and Apple claims it's just as fast as phones that claim to be 4G. The 4S also includes both GSM and CDMA, allowing you to travel abroad and be able to roam as needed.

The phone's camera has an 8MP sensor and can produce images up to 3264x2448. This allows you to print out a "perfect" 8x10 glossy photo. Photo capture is 33 percent faster than on iPhone, and the rear light provides 73 percent more light per pixel than the iPhone 4's. Other details were also mentioned, like the Hybrid IR filter, but what it comes down to is that the 4S camera should be noticeably better than those seen in previous iPhones. And that's not to mention the video recording -- the 4S is capable of 1080p video and real-time video image stabilization.

One of the most impressive new features, at least in theory, is the 4S-exclusive intelligent assistant, Siri. You can talk to the phone and ask it questions, like what the weather is, if you need an umbrella, what time it is somewhere, and so on, and the phone will provide you with an answer. It can even read you a text message, ask you questions about what to do with it, and more. It'll start out in beta and support English, French, and German; the "beta" tag simply means more services and languages will be added as time goes on.

Prior to the new phone's announcement, Cook briefly touched upon many of the new features being introduced with iOS 5, which is launching on October 12 as a free update. Game Center is said to have 67 million users signed up, and it will be adding Achievement points, photos, and friend recommendations. Given how bare bones it is presently, any new functionality is much welcome, though it could still do with a redesign.

Also of note is Apple claiming that the iPod Touch is both its most popular model of iPod and the "most popular portable game player in the world." A new line of iPod Touches featuring iOS 5 support (Game Center, iCloud, iMessage, etc.) was announced along with prices: 8GB for $199, 32GB for $299, and 64GB for $399. All three will be available in black and white on October 12.

The iPhone 4, meanwhile, is being reduced in price -- it'll be available in black and white for $99, while an 8GB 3GS will be free with the appropriate contract.
