Xbox 360 vs PlayStation 3 vs Nintendo Wii
Large games and hardware retailer GameStop has published two very interesting statistics about the console installed, based both in its native USA and in Europe, citing data from the NPD Group and from IDG, another analysis and statistics company.
In the US, according to data collected at the end of 2010, there are currently 249 million consoles in the country, with current generation hardware accounting for 141 million units.
Overall, the Wii beats its competition by having 34.2 million installed units, followed closely by the Xbox 360, with 25.4 million, while the PlayStation 3 is last, with just 15.4 million units now found in US homes.
The handheld market, as expected, is led by the Nintendo DS with a huge margin, having 47.3 million units in the hands of gamers across the USA, followed by the PlayStation Portable, with 19 million devices.
Older platforms like the PlayStation 2, original Xbox, GameCube or Game Boy Advance are still present in US homes, but their numbers are slowly dwindling.
Moving onto Europe, GameStop cites data from IDG, which says that there are currently 154 million consoles on the continent, and 114 million units being current-generation devices.
As expect, the Wii leads once more, with 24.9 million units, followed by the PlayStation 3, with 14.7 million, and the Xbox 360, with 13.7 million.
In terms of portable devices, the DS once again severely beats the PSP, with 46 million versus just 14.8 million.
GameStop also commented on the sales of actual video games, saying that a lot of growth is still expected in this area.
?Based on internal company estimates, we believe that the installed base of video game software units in the United States currently exceeds 1.98 billion units,? says GameStop in its report, published by Gamasutra. ?As the substantial installed base of video game hardware and software continues to expand, there is a growing demand for used video game products.?
As you can see, the Xbox 360 manages to stay popular in its native USA, while the PlayStation 3 still keeps its lead in Europe, a traditional market for the Japanese console. Both, however, are beaten by the Nintendo Wii in all territories.

Homefront PS3 patch releases, player complaints persist (Homefront)
Acting on numerous complaints about the PS3 version of Homefront regularly locking and freezing up, developer Kaos Studios issued a patch last night. According to THQ, the patch ?should make a significant difference? for players who have been experiencing difficulties with the PS3 version. But visit the official Homefront forum, and you?ll see that many players are still experiencing instances of freezing post-patch, while reports of other errors continue to pour in.
In addition to post-patch reports of freezing issues, forum users have been drawing attention to errors with the game?s leaderboard and stat tracking system. Kaos Studios is aware of the issues and assures players that the errors will be resolved. ?We are aware of the buggy leader boards and stat tracking issues and it is being addressed in an upcoming patch,? said Kaos?s Dan Matlack in one�forum post.
Xbox 360 users are also reporting similar problems and can expect a patch of their own soon. ?We have seen far fewer issues reported on 360 to date, but we are currently working on a title update that we trust will address most outstanding issues. As soon as we have a timeframe for this we will let you know,? said a THQ representative in an�official blog post.
According to THQ, the PC version of Homefront is apparently ?looking pretty robust right now,? adding that developers released a smaller patch yesterday for that version.
THQ and Kaos Studios have stated that both companies are committed to supporting Homefront post-launch, and encouraged players to continue reporting errors on the official forums. According to THQ, the hassles can be attributed to ?teething problems in the first few days as the kinds are ironed out.?

Marvel and Activision announce Spider-Man: Edge of Time
Marvel Entertainment and Activision have today announced that they are to release Spider-Man: Edge of Time, described as being a ?focused, action-packed adventure set in two connected and evolving timelines, from the contemporary times of the Amazing Spider-Man to the corrupted future world of Spider-Man 2099, against the backdrop of a rich, tightly crafted narrative by acclaimed Marvel veteran Peter David (co-creator of the comic book series Spider-Man 2099).?
Currently being developed by Activision-owned studio Beenox, Spider-Man: Edge of Time will challenge the player to take on the roles of both classic Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099 to correct a timestream gone awry and prevent a catastrophic future brought on by the early and untimely death of Peter Parker.
?The first Spider-Man entry by Beenox, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, was touted as one of the wall-crawler?s best Spider-Man games to date from both critics and fans,? comments Vicharin Vadakan, Director of Global Brand Management. ?Beenox is once again taking a fresh and different approach to bring a fast-paced and high-octane adventure and unexpected story to life in Spider-Man: Edge of Time.?

LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean First Look Preview -- Captain Jack Sparrow Gets Bricky With It
What happens when Pirates of the Caribbean meets LEGO? Well, besides LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game.�You get swashbuckling blocks and a lot of attention to detail. But what does the search for a plastic Black Pearl look like? Apparently, not like plain old plastic bricks. But don't take my word for it. Check out what Nikole Zivalich had to say when she checked the game out at GDC.�
"At first glance, LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean looks like a LEGO game; it's colorful, it's bouncy, and everything is made of LEGOS. But after my glance turned into a stare, I noticed the jungle I was in had textures, leaves, vines, none of which were made of LEGOS. What surprised me wasn't simply the detailed landscape, it was how detailed it was. Another level I was shown took place on a pirate ship, but rather than being on a shiny, plastic Black Pearl, I was on a rotted wood, lines in the planks, realistic looking pirate ship."
