Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection is a Hat Trick of Awesomeness

Even as our consumer rights are slowly whittled away by binding arbitration clauses, draconian DRM, and "online passes," we gamers still remain an awfully spoiled lot. And if you don't believe me, here's a stunning example: the asking price of the original NES Metal Gear in 1988? 50 American dollars. The cost of a fully remastered bundle containing Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (not to mention bonus remakes of the original MSX Metal Gears 1 and 2), purchased in 2011? 50 American dollars. As a pure value proposition, that's nearly impossible to beat; and, given the amount of finely crafted video game content contained in this little package, it's unlikely that you'll find a better disc to grace the system of your choice -- though it helps to be on board with the polarizing quirks of the Metal Gear series.

As a disclaimer, I feel it necessary to admit I'm a fan of most things Metal Gear, though it's equally important to inform you that I haven't let fanboyism shield me from its many flaws. Regardless of its various missteps, though, Metal Gear remains one of the few gaming franchises that exists solely as an auteurist expression, something that's becoming increasingly rare in these design-by-committee days of game development. That said, either you jive with Hideo Kojima's unique brand of lunacy, or you don't; and no amount of high-def polish is going to change your mind. While the Peace Walker portion of this collection has been granted a much-needed overhaul to controls and online play, parts 2 and 3 are simply prettier -- and these were very pretty games to begin with. Many would argue this collection provides the perfect opportunity to revamp the odd controls of Solids 2 and 3 (which were idiosyncratic at the time), but you only have to look at how Silicon Knights' attempt to do just this in The Twin Snakes resulted in a horribly broken game -- and besides, it's highly unlikely that Hideo Kojima would allow Bluepoint Games to alter even a byte of his legacy.

OnLive Expands To Include Square Enix Titles Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief & Hitman

OnLive Service Works On Cell Phones, Too

OnLive announced today that they will be expanding their monthly subscription "Playpack" plan to include more than twelve major franchise titles from Square Enix, includingTomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief, Mini Ninjas and Hitman. The Square Enix titles will begin arriving in the OnLive PlayPack service in a few weeks. For the uninitiated, OnLive's Playpack option allows "all you can play" gaming for $9.99 per month, either on your television via the OnLive Game System, or through your Mac or PC via a small browser download.

Steve Perlman, founder and CEO of OnLive, said "We?re proud of our strong partnership with Square Enix and we look forward to providing a solid and effective platform for their current and future game titles." Phil Rogers, CEO of Square Enix Europe added, "In the dynamically changing environment of digital distribution, it?s a natural fit for Square Enix to support an innovative offering like PlayPack from OnLive. We?re pleased to be able to share some of our classic games with the broader digital audience."

That might sound like plain marketing yammer, but what it translates to is "I can now play the classic Deus Ex games, on my TV!" That's all I needed to hear.

Peter Moore on Japan, EA, The Future

Peter Moore wears his career on his sleeve...or, more exactly, his arms. Sources differ on whether the Halo 2 tattoo he famously brandished at the 2004 Electronic Entertainment Expo is still there or not, but regardless of its current status, it reflects the brash personality he's brought to Sega, Microsoft and Electronic Arts during his time at each outfit. In August he was promoted to COO at EA, the position he used to have at Sega of America, making him once again one of the most powerful men in the game business.

He sat down with Japan's Famitsu magazine for a long interview this week, and -- despite the original Xbox's Asian struggles during his time at Microsoft -- Moore sounded remarkably upbeat about the Japanese market in general. "Japan is a very active market," he said, "and I think it's really got this spirit of always trying something new. The Japan game industry, in particular, is really unique in its passion and its cutting-edge technology -- those two things, combined, I think lets it run with anyone else in the world. I remember during my time at Sega, when Tetsuya Mizuguchi created Sega Rally; watching people have lots of fun playing it on dial-up. I really had to respect the drive among Japanese creators to always pursue new things."

That hasn't faltered any since the Dreamcast era he oversaw, in his eyes. "The level of Japanese technology is just as high as it was," he said. "The handheld market, in particular, has really matured, probably because the rail network is a fully-integrated part of society. I don't think portables have taken root so deeply in any other country in the world. It's a remarkable contrast from the US, where the culture revolves around playing console games on big-screen TVs in your large living room."

Even in the US, though, the major trend as of late seems to be going small -- with smartphones, social networks, and other forms of casual gaming. Moore, who oversees develop on both little iPhone projects and massive games like Battlefield 3, doesn't seem to mind. "What I can say is that the users always win in the end," he noted, "something I think the music market has made very plain. You had a retail music market that network distribution got driven into, and nobody had any idea how it would turn out at first. Now, though, it's transformed into a market where people can get the music they want more quickly and easily than ever. That's what we want to do at EA. As games go more into the cloud, there'll come a time when game services will be more tuned to user needs than ever before, something that I think Japanese gamers will be seeing soon enough."

It does seem that, overall, Japanese gamers are responding a bit more to EA these days. FIFA 12, for example, got 39 out of 40 points in Famitsu's review last month -- the highest score for any EA game ever, and a feat Moore is endlessly proud of. "I've spent the day going around shops in Akihabara and elsewhere, and I can tell that there's a major push for a lot of our titles," he said. "If we put in the effort on game quality, marketing investment, and branding, I think we've got to succeed. Orders on Battlefield 3 have been going well, and I think we'll have a really strong launch in Japan. We'll be releasing Need for Speed: The Run on December 1 -- Japan has a really developed car culture, and a lot of the best racing games have come from Japan. Along those lines, I think we'll take a triple-jump approach this holiday season with Battlefield, FIFA and Need for Speed."

Japan, as of late, has had a reputation as being a new "Galapagos" of technology, pursuing its own games and hardware and neither importing nor exporting much beyond its boundaries gamewise. Moore couldn't disagree with that stereotype more: "We live in a connected world, one where you can see all kinds of exciting things no matter where you are, and Japan is the same way. There's a lot that's unique about Japanese culture, but Japan isn't being left behind; they just respect their traditions. They're always on the cutting edge, and they're very flexible with taking in technology from the US and Europe. I really don't see this."

As proof of that, he brings up the Wii U, a system, he's characteristically enthusiastic about. "It's a very exciting machine and I'm glad to see it out there," he said. "I mean, a hi-def Nintendo platform! There's nothing that could make me happier. Its online capabilities are really extensive, too, so we'll be able to differentiate ourselves from the competition more easily with our sports lineup. We can't announce anything yet, but what I can say is that Nintendo is a company that's been producing new types of play culture for years. The 3DS and Wii U have taken on that DNA, so I really can't wait to see what kind of new surprises are waiting for us."

Where's the world industry going in the future? To Moore, the keyword to follow is "engagement." "Up to now," he explained. "the business model was to make advertising and try to spread it across as wide a range as possible in hopes of getting people to notice and buy our games. Recently, though, we've been talking more proactively with customers and selling products based on their reactions. There are lots of talented developers in the world, from Activision and Capcom to Konami and Namco Bandai Games, but we don't want to do the same thing as everyone else -- we want to build a foundation, like Facebook and Apple have, and use that to expand the entertainment opportunities for our customers."

Yahoo, Microsoft, AOL Share Display Inventory

Ross-LevinsohnStill no merger news, but Yahoo, Microsoft, and AOL have agreed to share unsold ?premium? display inventory among their respective ad networks.

The partnership, announced Tuesday, appeals directly to Madison Avenue?s desire for scalable reach -- something that has been increasingly hard to come by via TV, but not yet achievable online.

?This agreement should begin to change the industry?s perception of premium? inventory, Ross Levinsohn, Yahoo EVP of the Americas, said on a conference call late Tuesday.

More to the point, ?this is about differentiation,? Levinsohn added, in response to a direct question about increasing competition from Google and Facebook, and whether their rise brought Yahoo, AOL, and Microsoft together.

A clear and present threat, Facebook and Google are expected to increase their share of domestic display advertising this year by 9.3% and 16.3%, respectively, according to eMarketer.

Yet, by adding greater scale into the equation, the partners hope that the deal will increase demand for their premium display ad offerings.

Slated to begin in January, there was no word on the exact amount of inventory being made available. In broad terms, the partners plan to make ?the vast majority of our discretionary [inventory] available,? Rik van der Kooi, corporate vice president of the Microsoft Advertising Business Group, said on the conference call.

Regarding any concerns the Justice Department might have, the partners point out that the deal is nonexclusive, and that they plan to continue competing against each other as aggressively as ever.

Agencies and brands can still work directly with Yahoo Network Plus, AOL?s Advertising.com, or the Microsoft Media Network -- each of which attempts to differentiate itself in the areas of available data, optimization, packaging, and inventory.

Beginning next year, the Microsoft Advertising Exchange and Yahoo?s Right Media Exchange will initially serve as the two marketplaces from which the partners can procure this inventory for resale to advertisers and agencies.

AOL may, at its discretion, opt to use its own exchange technology solution subsequent to the launch of the partnership, the companies said Tuesday.

The deal will be effective in the United Stated for all three partners, and in Canada for Yahoo and AOL.

Xbox 720 Price and Features Rumor

Xbox 720
We?ve heard rumors and what-not about a successor to the Xbox 360 at work, and though many have had their say of the ?what will be? and ?what will be not?, no one has come up with plausible information from a plausible source? until now.

One of the newest reports comes from a source famously known as ?MS nerd,? who indicates that the next Xbox will be based on Windows 9, and will have an ARM architecture. It will also be much smaller and compact, and more importantly cost less than the Xbox 360.

Just a spoof you think? Well, MS nerd has been a viable information source before, as he/she leaked the now abandoned tablet project, called Microsoft Courier, before there was any sort of news for it.

You can check out the full post here.

Tempting and valid as it may sound, rumors are just rumors to the public until they?ve been proven. You can take this with a pinch of salt for now, as we?ll come back for any further news as they come.
