PixelJunk Monsters Soon to be in Your Browser for Free

PixelJunk Monsters

The PixelJunk Monsters series has been quiet as of late. With next to no warning, a new, free-to-play version of the tower defense game was announced yesterday at the Casual Connect event in Seattle.

Q-Games founder Dylan Cuthbert said on Twitter yesterday that the "latest PixelJunk Monsters will be shown" during a talk by designer Jesse Venbrux. He confirmed a press release would be coming later with the official announcement. Unfortunately that's come and offered up very little in the way of additional details. PixelJunk Monsters will be a free-to-play browser game for social networks and sports a new world map. Judging by the screenshots, the art style and game will see more changes than just those to the map, although the core tower defense gameplay appears to be mostly intact.

More details have made their way out courtesy of Cuthbert's Twitter. He claims the game won't be made easier because of the platform, and news about co-op will be announced later in the year. He describes this project as "something radically new" that Q-Games is trying, and if it does well "we'll consider other platforms." He also said, "It'll be fun to see if we can widen the audience and that'll encourage us to continue the series I think."

PixelJunk Monsters is currently available on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable. Following the PSP version's release during April 2010, Cuthbert wrote on the official PixelJunk forums last July that Q-Games was taking a "bit of a rest" from Monsters. "The PSP version didn't do as well as we hoped so we're giving it a bit of a break so we can come up with even more fresh ideas," he wrote. "We will come back to it though!"

A release date has yet to be determined; the announcement says it'll be coming to browsers "later this year." At no point was Facebook specifically mentioned, although you'd think that's a given for any game headed to social networks. Google Plus could be another possibility, what with Google adding support for games at some point.
