Last May, Angry Birds developer, Rovio Mobile, was part of a lawsuit that allegedly violated some patent rights for purchasing new game levels. Lodsys LLC, a Texas-based company claims to own these patents. Also included in the complaint are Electronic Arts, Atari, Iconfactory, Square Enix, and Take-Two Interactive.
This incident led Apple to interfere with the ongoing court case, stating that their authority to use Lodsys? patents also includes the application developer companies. The Texan company objected with Apple?s petition. According to Lodsys, the companies involved are huge enough to hold their own defense. There?s also no proof that the lawsuit interferes Apple?s affiliation with the developers.
Contrary to the statement of Lodsys, this litigation has made a big impact on Apple?s relationship with its developers. Not only do app developers revenues are affected, but so does Apple, since they have a cut for every application sold. All of the developers involved on the lawsuit signed the petition in support of Apple being permitted to join the case, an essential move that will help them protect their 425,000 apps from a patent troll such as Lodsys.
As of now, no date has been set for Apple?s request. We will keep you updated on the latest development.
