Deux Ex: The Eyeborg Documentary is a preview of our augmented future

We may be a decade or two away from equipping real world Reflex Boosters, Sarif Series 8 Energy Converters and Icarus Landing Systems, but as Square Enix's newly released documentary on modern day cyborgs demonstrates, the futuristic world of Deus Ex: Human Revolution may be way more science than fiction.

Deus Ex: The Eyeborg Documentary was produced to augment the arrival of Square Enix's Deus Ex: Human Revolution. It was made by Toronto filmmaker Rob 'Eyeborg' Spence who ? as his name subtly suggests ? became something of a first generation cyborg himself after replacing a lost eye with a rudimentary camera system that transmits wireless RX signals to a nearby receiver, allowing him to live stream and record everything he sees.

The doc is a refreshing detour from Deus Ex's marketing campaign, as it trades slick fuax-Sarif Industries ads for an uplifting look at real people benefitting from advances in prosthetic limbs, augmented reality and artificial sight restoration. Still, child-like wonder aside, one can't help get the creepy feeling Eyeborg's interviews will one day resurface as stock footage in a future documentary on ?The Leaders of the Cyborg Armageddon?.

Torchlight II Will Only Cost $20

Torchlight II

Just like its predecessor, Runic Games' new action-RPG, Torchlight II, will cost only $19.99 upon release. Although it might be more expensive than your average downloadable game, with everything that's been added, that sounds like a real bargain.

"It's always been our goal to provide exceptional value for the price," said Runic CEO Max Schaefer. "Everyone who wants to play Torchlight II will be able to comfortably afford to do so, and they'll be able to play with their friend online or via a LAN, or play single player offline, all with no further purchases."

Online multiplayer, after being a glaring omission in the original, is the big addition in the sequel. Many of the first game's strong points -- randomly-generated dungeons and the basic gameplay -- will make a return, which is precisely what many fans would hope for.

Joining the three character classes we already know of (the Engineer, Berserker, and Outlander) is the Embermage, who was announced alongside the price today. Some of the spellcaster's backstory can be read about on the official website; the important thing to note is, despite the "ember" part of the name, the class has access to ice and electric attacks in addition to fire.

Torchlight II is still without a release date. It's only scheduled to come to PC and Mac, with the PC version set to come before the end of the year. PAX attendees will be able to check it out for themselves at Runic's booth this weekend.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim DLC coming first to Xbox 360

Bethesda will be giving Xbox 360 owners a sizeable jump on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim DLC when it begins arriving after the game's launch this November. Today, the studio confirmed it has partnered with Microsoft for a timed exclusive DLC deal that will see Xbox 360 RPG'ers enjoying Skyrim's add-ons 30 days before anyone else.

?Xbox LIVE will be the first to bring players the experience of Skyrim?s add-on content in this revolutionized open-world fantasy epic where players can explore any way they choose,? reads today's announcement, repeating, ?If you?d like to be the first to break new ground in Skyrim, Xbox LIVE is the only destination that won?t keep you waiting.?

The release makes reference to ?the first two add-on content drops? arriving first on Xbox 360, but offers no details on what they might be. In hisrecent interview with AUS Gamers, director Todd Howard did say the DLC will allow players to continue exploring Skyrim after completing the main mission. He also said while the team is still working on the expansions' specifics, they intend to make the add-ons a step above standard DLC, noting, ?We?d like to do less DLC but bigger ones -- you know, more substantial. The Fallout 3 pace that we did was very chaotic. We did a lot of them -- we had two overlapping groups -- and we don?t know what we?re going to make yet, but we?d like them to be closer to an expansion pack feel.?

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - in all its pure, un-expanded form - arrives November 11 for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.

Penny Arcade Adventures Will Get a Third Episode After All

Penny Arcade Adventures 2

We thought the ridiculously long-titled, episodic Penny Arcade Adventures had come to an end with two games. Luckily for fans of Penny Arcade and fans of RPGs with a dash of humor, Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness will get a third entry, this one from a different developer.

Zeboyd Games is at work on Episode 3, according to RPGamer. Zeboyd is a relatively new developer, having been formed in 2010, but it made a name for itself with its quality RPGs Breath of Death VII and Cthulu Saves the World. Both started out as Xbox Live indie games and have since made their way onto PC.

The first two Penny Arcade RPGs were developed by Hothead Games. Last year, it announced that it wouldn't be working on a third game because "it just doesn't make sense for us as a company to complete the next installment."

At the time, it was busy working on DeathSpank. Penny Arcade's Jerry Holkins stated that Episode 3 would have suffered as a result of another game being developed on at the same time.

"So we'd rather not do it than do it half-assed and so we're going to finish that story but it's going to be on our website," he said last March.

The original plan was for there to be four games in total. For the third game, Zeboyd will be taking things in a different direction than the first two; it'll apparently be styled after 16-bit RPGs and will look to be released on "as many systems as we can." The first two games were released on PC, Mac, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.

Zeboyd's two staffers, Robert Boyd and Bill Stiernberg, were found at PAX Prime wearing Penny Arcade Episode 3 shirts. A 2012 date was printed on the back, so it looks like there's still going to be some waiting before we get our hands on it. We'll definitely be learning more by the time PAX East rolls around in April.

Postcard from PAX: The Best Revenge is Living Awkwardly

One thing I've always appreciated about PAX is that the attendees are so darned normal. We're all nerds, sure, but the show is packed with folks who are basically just regular dudes and ladies chilling out and having a good time with friends. Unlike E3, Comic-Con, or even TGS, you rarely come into contact with high-strung basement-dwellers who are more concerned with racking up a suitcase full of free swag than with trivialities like "bathing" or "basic social graces." PAX is the essence of "laid back."

That said, you stick this many geeks together and you're bound to encounter your share of awkward moments. Like here on the plane, where the aisle seat of my row went unoccupied, yet the guy in the middle seat didn't scoot over to give us both more elbow room. Instead, he set up the empty outside seat as his personal snack bar, stretching out in luxury while leaving me uncomfortably wedged between him, the window, and the fully reclined dude in front of me.

I wondered to myself, "Who on earth would fail to observe such basic airplane etiquette? Who wouldn't spread out, given the chance? Who does that?" Then he whipped out a DS Lite and started playing Sonic Colors, and I realized this was a disgruntled Sonic fan getting back at me for that episode of Retronauts. Well played, Internet.

'Rage' Video Shows Off Art, Sound, And John Goodman

null

The behind-the-scenes videos on the creation process behind id Software's upcoming "Rage" are still ? er, raging on. Today, the team gives us our sixth installment in the series, this time taking a look at the art and sound design of what looks like a promising new property. There's some developer commentary on the designer's thought process, but perhaps more appealing, there's video of none other than John "Walter Sobchak" Goodman recording his lines for the game.

Check out the video right after the jump.

With few exceptions, John Goodman is absolutely one of my favorite actors. I will pretty much stay glued to almost anything that man is involved in, thanks to his commanding presence in both his on-screen charisma and immediately recognizable voice. Somehow, I was completely unaware that Goodman was involved in "Rage" up until this point, but I'm really excited to see what he does with the character. Previously, if wanted to play as Goodman in a video game, I had to play "Cars Race-O-Rama," so ? yeah I think I'll stick with "Rage."

While the aural experience is definitely heightened with great voice talent, what's been shown of "Rage" from a visual standpoint looks gorgeous, as well. While the post-apocalyptic setting is about as original an idea as exploding barrels, the game does look really sharp. The level of detail in the toppled buildings and scrap-strewn path shown in the video is really impressive.

"Rage" releases for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC on October 4.
