3DS Gets Nintendo Video in North America Later This Summer

Nintendo Video, a 3DS app that delivers free content to the handheld, will be made available in Japan and Europe tomorrow, July 13. North America, meanwhile, will have to continue waiting.

Nintendo Video, like the Spot TV service already available in Japan, will routinely offer free 2D and 3D video downloads. Whereas Spot TV offers daily, original content from Fuji TV and Nippon TV, Nintendo Video will deliver content less often, according to Andriasang.

In Europe, the first offering of content will include 3D episodes of a cartoon series called Oscar's Oasis and exclusive, 3D episodes of a program demonstrating various magic tricks. Videos are downloaded automatically through SpotPass when you're in range of a Wi-Fi access point.

As for North America, it could be another two-plus month wait. Nintendo of America's senior director and GM of network business, Tony Elison, told 1UP, "Nintendo's short-form video service that delivers special video content for Nintendo 3DS systems will launch in North America later this summer."

To make up for the news, he also said that Netflix streaming, first announced at GDC, will be launching "soon." It will be free to use, provided you've got a Netflix account (which you'll soon be paying more to have).

Take that "soon" as you will; Nintendo originally said Netflix would be available sometime this summer, so there may be a wait yet as summer doesn't technically end until September 21 rolls around.
