Is the Next Super Smash Bros. Game Called Universe?

Super Smash Bros Brawl

The announcement of the new Super Smash Bros. may have been premature, but Nintendo apparently felt it needed a big game to talk about -- if not show -- at this year's E3. With Masahiro Sakurai still busy working on Kid Icarus: Uprising, details were anything but forthcoming beyond the fact that it's coming to Wii U and 3DS. Now a leaked document allegedly shows off some potential ideas for the game and a possible name.

The image below surfaced on 4chan and was then posted on Reddit earlier today. It shows the game's name as being Super Smash Bros. Universe, with the "U" in Universe using the same style of U seen in the logo for Wii U. The idea makes sense, though with this sort of thing it's always best to take anything and everything with a grain of salt. Keep in mind that the page seems to indicate both the Japanese and English names for the game would use the same subtitle, whereas previous games did not -- Melee carried the subtitle DX in Japan while Brawl was simply X.

According to a translation by Zelda Informer (via Super Smash Bros. World), the document alludes to more third-party support (presumably meaning more third-party characters like Snake and Sonic), the removal of tripping (also known as Prat Falling), and increasing the movement speed of Samus in light of how she handles in Other M.

With Kid Icarus: Uprising being delayed, Sakurai may be kept busy for a while longer, though that doesn't mean ideas aren't already floating around for what the next Smash Bros. could include. Of course, it's entirely possible the entire thing is fake. Given how scarce information has been about the game to this point, fans will likely eat this right up and continue speculating about what changes could be in store anyway. (In the meantime, don't forget to check out the final release of the new, free PC game that lets you play Smash Bros. in the style of a Game Boy game.)

As you'd expect, Nintendo gave the usual 'no comment' line about rumors and speculation when contacted by 1UP.

"Right now, we're devoting all our manpower to working on Kid Icarus," Sakurai said in June when asked about the new Smash Bros. following its announcement. "We've got no plans whatsoever -- we've got two new games out in the open when there's no extra time to work with them at all. It makes me cringe, and I'm not sure it's the smartest thing to make gamers wait for several years, but the early announcement was made chiefly in order to attract new team members."

"The hardest part about game development is the burdens it places upon me," he continued. "With previous projects I had a game design document in place before forming a team, but with this I don't have the time for that. I won't be able to look at every aspect of the game and balance out all the characters by myself this time. I'm trying to think about how this is going to work out, but probably I'll have to discuss it with my future development team. The future of this project really depends on the people I can get involved with it."
