Today in Gaming - 2/17/11: The Walking Dead and Bungie's Next Game

Portal 2

Someone claiming to have been a former contractor at Bungie seemingly leaked the first details on Bungie's next project today. The developer has denied that anyone has been laid off recently, which casts doubt on the story told by the source, including the suggestion that Bungie is developing an MMOFPS. That said, the pieces do seem to fit together -- between certain comments from Bungie staff and the description of certain positions it was looking to fill last year, an MMO of some sort makes sense. It's an exciting prospect to think about. With Bungie's experience making shooters, it would certainly be an interesting game.

Highlights from today's news:

  • Just as we first pondered following a press event invitation last month, The Walking Dead game has turned out to be real.
  • The January NPD figures are out. Black Ops is on top. Imagine that.
  • The Fables comic book series is also being made into a game by Telltale.
  • Call in tomorrow to discuss Zelda live on Retronauts for an upcoming podcast.

And here's what else happened today:

Portal 2 Doesn't Support PlayStation Move

Despite claims to the contrary, Valve has issued a statement making it clear that Portal 2 will not support PlayStation Move on the PS3. Valve chalks up the misunderstanding to a quote "lost in translation." It's actually a pretty neat concept to think about, and given that Valve is going all out for the PS3 version, it wasn't an unreasonable idea to believe. Well, there's always Portal 3. I hope.

Platform Holders 'Need to Adjust Business Models'

THQ CEO is of the opinion that Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony cannot maintain the status quo when it comes to the business model their respective platforms follow. He believes it's time to evolve beyond the $60 boxed retail product. He said, "What we really need, and we've been talking to them about it, is for Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo, if they really want to stay at the cutting edge of the games business, they need to adjust their business models to allow for these new consumer experiences. Consumers are going to demand it, in our view."

Retail to Remain Nintendo's Focus

There's clearly a movement in the direction of digital game sales, particularly on PC. But that doesn't mean retail is going anywhere, according to Nintendo. "We have never seen any link between growth in the mobile gaming market and decrease in the normal software market," said Nintendo's Laurent Fischer. "It's two different markets, two different topics. We couldn't find any evidence of those two markets being linked." Fischer also added, "People who talk about the end of physical media don't share the same daily reality as most consumers."

PlayStation 4 Not Being Deliberated Yet

Sony is all about the 10-year life cycle for its game consoles. It doesn't consider the PS3 to even be at the halfway point yet, and as such, it is "not deliberating on a PS4 or a next generation machine, whatever you call it," Sony's Kaz Hirai said. He also reaffirmed that the PS3 is still developing as a system -- "Every year, we reveal and release new features," he added.
