A "major announcement" regarding the Call of Duty series will be made soon, according to a source, Rock, Paper, Shotgun reports.
Specifics of the announcement weren't detailed. It might be something to do with the "online solution" that's been mentioned in the past, possibly even a game called Call of Duty Online. RPS speculates it could be a free-to-play online title similar to EA's Battlefield Heroes and Battlefield Play4Free titles, which would be a new direction for Activision.
Back in February, the publisher announced that a digital platform for Call of Duty was in the works. It has yet to explain exactly what that will be -- or what the new Beachhead studio is working on.
With Activision Blizzard's quarterly results scheduled to be released on Monday, we may learn more then. There are a lot of questions out there at the moment, including when the next Call of Duty proper will be revealed. It's expected out later this year to compete with Battlefield 3.
