How Portal 2 Steam Support Works on PlayStation 3

Steam

As the first game to bring Steam to a console, there are some questions about how the service will work when Portal 2 is released on April 19. Valve's Doug Lombardi has offered up a brief overview of what features will be supported and how it'll all work.

When Valve surprisingly revealed at E3 last year that it would be delivering what it calls the best console version of Portal 2 on PS3 (complete with Steamworks support), features like downloadable content, community features, and automatic updates were mentioned. Lombardi says that much more will be featured: Cross-platform matchmaking, friends, text chat, Steam Achievements (which will be earned along with standard PlayStation Network Trophies), and Steam Cloud will all ship with Portal 2. Cloud save games will make it possible to start playing the game on one PlayStation 3 system and then pick up your progress on another PS3 by simply connecting to Steam.

After booting up the game, you'll have the opportunity to link your PSN account to your Steam account (or create a new one, should you not already have one). Once you've done that, you'll be able to access a Steam overlay while playing that will show your friends' statuses and allows you to access text chat, friend requests, player profiles, and game invites.

Portal 2 appears to be headed towards an early release, at least in the case of the PC version. Valve has been conducting an alternate reality game since the beginning of the month and signs are currently pointing towards a release this Friday if certain conditions are met. More than likely, the PlayStation 3 version, along with the (apparently inferior) Xbox 360 version, will still be coming out next Tuesday.
