Portal 2's Biggest Secrets

Caution: Portal 2 spoilers ahead. If you raced through Portal 2's single-player mode just to see the (incredibly awesome!) ending, you probably teleported right past some cool secrets. Tucked into Aperture Science's cobwebby recesses are hidden areas that shed light on Aperture's past and the enigmatic Caroline -- and even hint at the connection between Portal and Half Life 2. As if that wasn't reason enough to get exploring, you'll also get several Achievements for poking your nose where it doesn't belong.

For the Ship Overboard Achievement, play through Chapter 6: The Fall until you get to the 1971 test facility. You'll know you're in the right area when Cave Johnson starts yammering about testing on hobos. Below the giant Aperture sign is a room marked "CONTROL ROOM" in yellow lettering. You can use a portal to get high above the Control Room and enter a small office. In the corner of this office is a cabinet with a functional door behind it. Enter this door to find a secret hallway that leads to a dock. Here you'll find an orange life preserver marked "BOREALIS." Examine it to get the Ship Overboard Achievement. This is a reference to the Aperture ship, Borealis, seen at the end of Half Life 2: Episode 2.

In Chapter 6: The Fall, there are six sealed metal doors marked "VITRIFIED." Behindthese doors are some of Aperture's earliest (failed) experiments. Each door has a button that activates an audio clip of Jonathon Cave explaining the experiment within. Find all six of these and you'll get an Achievement. Three of them are in the hallway leading to the Ship Overboard area discussed above, while the other three can be found at the beginning of Chapter 6. After flying through the Aperture logo and entering the 1960s era facility, you'll come to an area with a tall elevator. At the top of the elevator, teleport over to the only spot you can create a portal on, high above the chasm. The three Vitrified Doors are on this platform.

In Portal 2, it is implied that Jonathon Cave's assistant Caroline eventually became the AI construct GLadOS, but what did she look like as a human? An awesome Easter egg at the beginning of Chapter 7: The Reunion reveals just that. Between tests 1971-01 and 1971-02, place a portal on the wall to the right of the entrance to 1971-02. Look for another pad you can slap a portal onto through the fence -- it's just past the adjacent stairway. On the other side of the portal is an office with a large portrait of Cave Johnson and, presumably, his assistant Caroline. Stare at the portrait and GLadOS will comment on it, thus granting you the Achievement .

Portal players may remember the mysterious "Rat Man" that left scrawled messages in nooks behind the test chambers of the first game. He left his mark in this game as well, in Chapter 2, Test Chamber 6. You can spot a broken window above this room, and it's fairly easy to figure out how to launch into the hidden area, but to unlock all of Rat Man's secrets, and the Achievement, you need to bring a radio with you. Luckily, a radio drops out of the tube, along with a bunch of trash, when you hit a nearby button. Grab the radio and enter the Rat Man's room and the music will fade out, replaced by an unintelligible transmission. Knowing Valve, there is almost certainly a message hidden in the static but, despite our best efforts, we couldn't decode it (can you?).
