GTA Developer Rumored to be on Board with Wii Successor

Grand Theft Auto IV

Following last week's rumors about Nintendo's alleged new console, a new report suggests that Rockstar Games will be developing titles for the system.

French website 01net, which was also the source of rumors about the new system's controller (and previously had details about the NGP ahead of its release), claims Rockstar is already on board with what it continues to say is codenamed Project Caf. Gamekyo added that Grand Theft Auto V (rumored to be in development) could be the game Rockstar brings to the platform, although that appears to be nothing more than speculation based on 01net's report.

Rockstar hasn't traditionally offered much support for Nintendo consoles. GTA: Chinatown Wars started out as a DS title before later being ported to other platforms, and Manhunt 2, Bully: Scholarship Edition, and Rockstar Table Tennis all saw Wii releases. Beyond that, you have to go back to Grand Theft Auto Advance and Smuggler's Run: Warzones to find other Rockstar-developed games on Nintendo platforms.

The Wii has often been criticized for its lack of hardcore games, particularly those created by third-party developers. Getting Rockstar to develop games for its next console would be a huge boon for Nintendo, though it remains to be seen if this is actually the case. 01net reaffirmed that the new system will be revealed in June and, unlike Game Informer's original story, claims it will be released in June 2012.
