Today in Gaming - 4/8/11: Nintendo's Babysitting Tool, Twisted Metal Dated

Sony's knocking of (what is at least perceived to be) the audience who plays games on Nintendo handhelds is so strange because Sony's PSP is very popular with the young crowd. So why criticize the competition over that point? Not only that, but the DS has enjoyed far more success than the PSP, and Nintendo has now beaten the NGP to market with the 3DS by what will likely turn out to be at least seven or eight months. And given the way Sony recently spoke about price not making or breaking a platform, it sounds like the 3DS could very well end up being cheaper, too, which gives Nintendo's newest handheld a lot of advantages over the NGP moving forward.

Today's highlights:

And here's what else happened today:

Nintendo Wants to Work With More Studios Like Retro

Nintendo was obviously pleased working with Retro Studios, given that it was tapped to develop not only the three Metroid Prime games, but last year's Donkey Kong Country Returns, as well. Asked if it would be interested in looking to work with more foreign developers, Nintendo's Kensuke Tanabe said, "I absolutely believe so. I work with other development partners, such as [Punch Out developer] Next Level Games in Vancouver and [Pilotwings Resort] developer Monster Studios in Minneapolis." He also added, "And they, much like Retro, really get our development philosophies. I want to find as many people as we can, as many great companies as we can to get involved with. I'm really looking for developers with a sense of craftsmanship." He qualified this by saying that "there's a real increase in the number of companies that look like they're really running a business for business' sake. There are many of those certainly within the midst of the gaming industry as a whole, or at least I feel that way."

Team Fortress 2 Players Donate $430k

In just two weeks, the Team Fortress 2 community donated a great deal of money to charity -- $430,543.65, to be precise. The money is going to benefit the disaster relief effort in Japan. It was accumulated through the sale of special hats that were sold through the in-game store.

Portal 2 Webcomic Released

The first part of the Portal 2 webcomic has been released today. It starts to fill in some of the backstory of the Portal series, and in particular, the gap between the first and second games. Interesting as it is, it's unclear if the comic has anything to do with the ARG that Valve currently has going on. You can check out the first part of the comic here.
